ROLLER (REVOLVER) CANCELLATIONS

 

LONDON

There appears to have been four different Roller cancellations for London although only the first two show up in the Proof Books

Type 1

Proof entry circa July 1856

Characteristics: Continuous lines surrounding ‘75’  in diamond for the London Inland Office

Proofed: circa July 1856 and then a further entry (recut) circa December 1857

EKD: ??? As far as I am aware no dated (or indeed undated) example has been recorded

LKD: ???

Type 2

Type 3

Characteristics: Previous studies had shown this to be a 3-7-3 bar series. However, looking at the known examples and having seen the actual Roller machine (courtesy of BPMA) it is a definite 3-5-3 bar system as per Type 4 below

Type 4

Characteristics: No: 2 in a square surrounded by 3-5-3 horizontal lines. It is assumed that this (and Type 3) are Roller cancellations although it is difficult to prove either way.
