SIDEWAYS DUPLEX TYPES, CHARACTERISTICS AND PARTICIPATING TOWNS

There were eleven different Types although my listing has followed the Traill and Holland methodology which details eight different Types and three sub-Types.

Below the Type images, I have detailed the relevant participating towns from where you can progress into the data  related to each town. Please note that these images not necessarily to         scale.

This was the first sideways duplex (along with 1b) and was issued to 4 Towns. It, and 1b, were the only marks which had the name of the Town at the top with the sideways obliterator facing to the left.
In the Sheffield mark the inner arc was broken to make way for the code letter and the width of the dater was 20 - 21mm compared with the other Towns using this Type at 22 - 23mm.

This Type is known as the ‘Reading Biscuit’ and was only issued to this Town

This is the most abundant Type and was issued to 139 Towns and in some instances there were many recuts/new stamps issued e.g. Manchester received a total of 89 stamps over the years.
Of particular interest are the Devonport marks which received a number 620 obliterator (which was Plymouth’s number) and then subsequently the correct number 250.
The width of the datestamp was 23 - 27mm.

This is similar to Type 2 except that the width of the dater is 20 - 21mm.
It was issued to 20 Towns.

This is the first Type with a single arc and was only issued to 2 Towns.
The width of the dater is 22mm.

This is similar to Type 4 except that the width of the dater is 19 - 20mm.
It was issued to 9 Towns.

Similar to Type 5a except that the layout in the dater is different. In this Type the code is above the date and the year is expressed in only 2 numerals.
It was issued to 13 Towns.

This was issued to 2 London S.E. Districts and 2 London W.Districts.

This was issued only to 1 London S.E District with the S.E. Being incorporated into the dater.

This was only issued to Birmingham and is the only mark where the dater circle is unbroken.

This is a mix of the other marks but with the obliterator being upright.
It was issued to 28 Towns

I have included this mark as it is mentioned in the Traill and Holland book. However, it is not recorded in the Proof Books and I do not know of anyone that has seen a copy.
More information would be very much appreciated.
