 Please note the following: a) all images are not necessarily to scale and b) all Dates shown * have been obtained from     the relevant reference books . Those without have been verified by myself.

  Regarding Scarcity; whilst I might state the mark to be Common this is relative to other Roller cancels and in fact all of   them are relatively scarce

ABERDEEN

 

Characteristics: No: 1 in typical Scottish design

Proofed: I cannot find this mark in the Proof Books and indeed it is ignored in most reference books; the exception being Alcock & Holland

EKD: 14th June 1860         LKD: 2nd April 1862

Scarcity: RARE; I have seen only two dated copies

LONDON TYPE 1

 

Characteristics: No: 1 in a square surrounded by 3-7-3 horizontal lines

Proofed: ???

Scarcity: RARE;  I have not seen a dated copy. Only seen on stamp

Characteristics: No: 2 in a square surrounded by 3-5-3 horizontal lines

Proofed: ??

EKD: 4th February 1858        LKD: 1884

Scarcity: RARE; I have only seen one dated copy on piece and several undated on stamp only

LONDON TYPE 75

 

Characteristics: No: 75 in a diamond surrounded by  3-8-3 horizontal lines

Proofed: August 1856. There was a repair in December 1857 and there does appear to be a slight difference but I await examples.

BIRMINGHAM

 

Characteristics: Similar to the 1844 marks but in a strip

Proofed: August 1856

EKD: 25th October 1856               LKD: 25th February 1862

Scarcity: RARE; I have only seen two dated copies

LONDON TYPE 76

 

Characteristics: No: 76 in a diamond surrounded by  3-8-3 horizontal lines

Proofed: August 1856. There was a repair in December 1857 and there does appear to be a slight difference but I await examples.

Characteristics: Vertical numbers

Proofed: October 1855

Scarcity: The current view is that this was never issued. If a copy is found then extremely RARE

EDINBURGH TYPE 3

 

Characteristics: Space between individual marks

Proofed: February 1856 with many recuts

EKD: 11th April 1856                LKD: 19th June 1880

Scarcity: Probably the more Common of the Edinburgh marks having a long life. There would seem to have been many recuts and I will endeavour to see whether there were any differences

Scarcity: Relatively SCARCE

Proofed: Mackay says March 1857 with continuous lines but I have not seen this although there is a March 1857 with spaces (as shown) and also a  repaired mark in the Proof books dated September 1857

Scarcity: Relatively SCARCE
